Broadleaf Celebrates 5 Years of Health and Education in the Eastern Himalayas!
On March 31st, Broadleaf celebrated 5 years of health and education in the Eastern Himalayas with a cocktail event in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Over 120 people joined us at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn, where we celebrated and reflected on the past five years and shared our goals for the future.
This is the third event that Broadleaf has held in Stroudsburg, the hometown of cofounders Michael and Denna Matergia. This year, we held our first ever silent auction and it was an incredible success! The local community generously donated artisan items, entertaining experiences, and delectable dining opportunities. All items were competitively bid on and proceeds will go towards continuing Broadleaf’s work in India.
In addition to the silent auction, cofounders Michael and Denna Matergia spoke about the organization’s roots, current health and education projects, and exciting results from the schools and communities Broadleaf serves. Denna shared some heartwarming anecdotes from the field including the story a man from Darjeeling who shared a charming story about his young granddaughter. After learning about the importance of oral hygiene through Broadleaf’s CHHIP program, his granddaughter now insists that her family walk the long and dark dirt path each night in order to brush their teeth. Additionally, SHA of the year, Maryam, was celebrated for her outstanding dedication. These stories were accompanied by strong data that we have collected and analyzed over the past five years that show a consistent trajectory of growth.
Since the founding of Broadleaf, our programs have been implemented in 16 schools and have positively affected over 2,000 students. It is clear that Broadleaf is making an impact in the Eastern Himalayas and this event and the cofounders’ presentation was a celebration of the organization's achievements.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who braved the rainy Poconos weather to join us at this event! Broadleaf is proud to be grounded in such a supportive and kind community. We also want to thank all of the local businesses for their generous support of our first silent auction:
